Studies in Endemic Fluorosis: Visakhapatnam and Suburban Areas: Distribution of Fluorine in Local Waters

چکیده
Raghavachari and Venkataraman (1940) King Institute, Guindy, reported the occurrence of fluorides in waters from the Visakhapatnam District. Further particulars sought from the King Institute indicated: "In connection with the investigation of rural water supplies, a large number of samples from bore wells and dug wells in the Visakhapatnam District were analysed; 11 sources yielded water containing one part per million or above". However, none of the 11 sources listed belong to the city of Visakhapatnam or its suburbs. Nevertheless, a few cases of mottled enamel were noticed among people of this locality. Occurrence -of mottled enamel is usually associated with about one part per million of fluorine in domestic waters; an inquisitiveness to know if local water supplies

Treatment of Dental Fluorosis
Dental fluorosis is the result of chronic endogenic intake of fluorides in amounts exceeding the optimal daily dose of 1 ppm In our country different mineral waters with high content of fluorine are on the market. As a result in numerous regions and settlements the cases of fluorosis with different degrees of seriousness have become more frequent in recent years. The aim of this study is to tes...

All animal tissues and plants contain fluorine in very small amounts. It is found in soils, rocks and water. No convincing evidence has been as yet produced to show that it performs any useful function in animal nutrition, or that it is essential for animal metabolism. During the past 15 years, however, evidence has been accumulated to show that the prolonged ingestion of abnormal quantities pr...
متن کاملSkeletal Changes in Endemic Fluorosis
Endemic fluorosis is a chronic fluorine intoxication found in certain parts of the world where there is excessive fluorine in the water and soil. It affects the teeth and skeleton, and secondarily the nervous system (Siddiqui 1955; Jolly, Singh and Singh 1961; Singh, Jolly and Bansal 1961 ; Singh and Jolly 1961). The skeletal changes in experimental and industrial fluorosis are well recognised ...
متن کاملA health risk assessment for fluoride in Central Europe.
Like many elements, fluorine (which generally occurs in nature as fluoride) is beneficial to human health in trace amounts, but can be toxic in excess. The links between low intakes of fluoride and dental protection are well known; however, fluoride is a powerful calcium-seeking element and can interfere with the calcified structure of bones and teeth in the human body at higher concentrations ...
متن کامل[The effect of fluorine on the developing human brain].
Fifteen therapeutically aborted fetuses at the 5th-8th gestation month from the endemic fluorosis area were compared with those from the non-endemic area. Stereological study of the brains showed that the numerical density of volume of the neurons and the undifferentiated neuroblasts as well as the nucleus-cytoplasm ratio of the neurons were increased. The mean volume of the neurons was reduced...
